Ordering prints

You can order prints of images from any of the galleries just by sending an email. Automatic on-line sales are not available. We handle every order on a personal basis. Please read the rest of this page for further information.

All print sizes specified are paper sizes. The actual size of the printed image will be smaller, because not all images are the same shape as the paper, and because all prints are made with a border, suitable for masking and framing.

Prints up to 13 × 19" (paper size) are made in-house on an Epson R-1800 inkjet printer using original Epson Ultrachrome pigment inks. Depending on the nature of the image, we generally use either Epson premium glossy paper or Epson Radiant White Watercolor (matt) paper. This combination of paper, printer and inks offers exceptional image quality and longevity. When mounted and framed using acid-free archival-quality materials, and displayed behind glass under indoor lighting and clean atmospheric conditions, glossy prints may be expected to last 100+ years without appreciable fading (check www.wilhelm-research.com for details); watercolor paper prints 200+ years.

Larger prints, if required, can be made by selected specialist printers, subject to special order. See below for further details.

All prints are made individually to order. In all cases you need to specify:

    1. The ID number(s) of each of the prints you want.

IMPORTANT: the ID number is the 12 character code at the very bottom right of the image page in the gallery. The sequential number below the image won’t do because it can change when I add or remove images from the gallery.

    2. The size(s) you want and quantity for each size.

    3. Paper type preference for 13 × 19" prints (glossy or watercolor)*.

    4. Your name and address for shipping.

    5. Preferred means of payment.

        * Smaller prints are made on glossy paper.

Prints are shipped flat or rolled, depending on size, in suitable packaging. We do not offer matting or framing services. If a print arrives damaged, you may return it for replacement free of charge.

Payment is normally via PayPal. Other payment methods subject to prior agreement. Discounts available for large orders. Specific assignments are welcomed, subject to time constraints.

Limited-edition prints

Limited-edition prints are so designated at the end of the description at the bottom of the gallery page where the image appears, following the caption, for example:

“Limited edition of ten 13×19" prints, $100 per print. Inkjet print on glossy paper.”

Prices do not include shipping and handling, which is charged at cost.

Any of these prints can be ordered so long as the edition is still available. When the edition limit is reached, images are marked as “SOLD OUT”. As always, the sizes given are paper size. The image size is always slightly smaller, depending on border width and format. The edition limit does not include smaller prints, reproductions in magazines or books, and proof prints (of which no more than two per edition may be preserved). Prices of limited-edition prints are subject to change without notice as editions mature. Limited prints are signed and numbered in pencil on the back and come with a signed and numbered information sheet which may be attached to the back of the frame or kept separately.

In a few cases, the larger sizes may not be available on account of image quality limitations (see below). Larger sizes than those listed above may also be available, up to 120cm (47 inches) on the shorter side. These will be printed by outside specialists, under our supervision. Sales approval of such larger prints is subject to quality considerations and acceptance of a quotation. While we always seek the best quality outside printing services available, we cannot provide longevity estimates for prints made by third parties.

Image quality

The maximum size of print which looks acceptably sharp and free of grain (film-based images) or noise (digital images) depends on the equipment and technology used, the distance from which the print is to be viewed, the character of the image and several other factors. The most appropriate equipment to be used depends on the type of photography. Specialist landscape photographers, for example, often use large format cameras with sheet film or digital scanning backs, capable of flawless prints up to very large sizes. Street photographers tend to use small-format cameras suitable for fast operation. Whenever possible I use the camera most appropriate to the situation from among those I own, which include 35mm and 6×7cm film cameras and various digital cameras.

The small low-resolution images in this website all look sharp (except for cases of deliberate selective focus or motion blur). This is no guarantee, however, that very large prints will also look perfect. Most images on this site (including all those designated as limited editions) can be printed at least up to 13 × 19" without problems, but in the event you order an image which cannot be printed at the size requested without compromising quality, you will be warned before your order is accepted.

Framing suggestions

“Arquival” quality (acid-free) materials should be used for matting and framing all photographic prints, whether chemically or digitally processed.

If the prints are to be displayed, they should be framed behind glass, and kept out of direct sunlight or other very bright lighting. High humidity should be avoided because of the risk of mildew.

For framing a 13×19" print, we recommend an external matte size of at least 18×24".
